چکیده

We propose a method that uses the point spread function of specular reflection (SR-PSF) to simulate paper gloss. The SR-PSF is defined as the impulse response of specular reflection, which is the distribution of light intensity reflected from microscopic facets on the surface of the paper. In this study, we used a flat sample holder and measured the SR-PSFs of six paper samples, each of which had a different level of specular gloss. We then used two different methods based on the measured SR-PSFs to simulate the gloss of curved paper. The results show that the gloss of curved paper can be adequately simulated by using the measured SR-PSF of that paper.

Highlight disparity contributes to the authenticity and strength of perceived glossiness.

The disparity of highlights on specular reflecting surfaces usually differs from the disparity of the surface points. A. Kirschmann (1895) proposed that this fact may be used as a binocular cue for gloss perception. This was confirmed by A. Blake and H. Bülthoff (1990) who found that subjects judged the glossiness of convex ellipsoidal surfaces as most realistic if the disparity of the highligh...

Determination of Effects of Primer Surfacer Properties on the Automotive Coating Appearances by DOE

In general, the evaluation of automotive coatings appearances favors (is considered preferentially) more than chemical and physical properties. Therefore, its improvement is most required. Studying appearance by means of QMS-BP technique, in which it measures some of the most important coating appearance factors, such as: the specular gloss, distinctness of image (DOI) and orange peel. In this ...

Perturbation Methods for Image Synthesis

This thesis presents new mathematical and computational tools for applying perturbation methods to image synthesis. The key idea is to characterize families of closely related optical paths by expanding a given path into a high-dimensional Taylor series. Our methods are based on the closed-form expressions for linear and higher-order approximations of specularly reflected rays of light, which a...

Luminance-based specular gloss characterization.

Gloss is a feature of visual appearance that arises from the directionally selective reflection of light incident on a surface. Especially when a distinct reflected image is perceptible, the luminance distribution of the illumination scene above the sample can strongly influence the gloss perception. For this reason, industrial glossmeters do not provide a satisfactory gloss estimation of high-...

Impact of compression pressure on tablet appearance.

The color of model tablets deepened and tablet gloss increased with increase in compression pressure regardless of colorant type. The possible reasons for these phenomena were examined. These observations could not be explained either by polymorphic transition of the colorant or by condensation of the colorant during compression. Instead, a change in surface roughness was assumed to be the most...
